The enlarged labia can have a protuberant and abnormal appearance that can be distressful. Enlargement of the labia minora may be caused by pregnancy and childbirth and other hormonal causes. Local irritation, problems with personal hygiene, interference with sexual intercourse and discomfort during cycling, walking or sitting are indications for surgical reduction. Labiaplasty or labial reduction involves a plastic surgical technique to reduce the large or uneven labia minora to a thinner, more comfortable, and more appealing size and shape. The aim of labial reduction surgery is to preserve most of the natural contour, pigmentation, and sensitivity of the labia minora with minimal scarring.
1. How do I determine if my labia is still normal in size?
There is really no exact shape that can be considered normal because this will be different for every woman. Each has their own anatomy. You can only say that your labia may no longer be the right size or shape once you start to feel uncomfortable with it. This may be due to stretched or overly bulged labial skin.
2. How can a labiaplasty affect or improve my life?
A labiaplasty will certainly make your life more comfortable especially if this has been bothering you too much. It will make you feel more comfortable and confident in wearing certain clothes. It will also allow you to enjoy sex once again as the excess skin is removed.
3. How long will the procedure take?
The entire procedure can usually take one to two hours. The amount of work done will depend upon the needs of the patient and the look she is aiming to achieve. This will be determined by your surgeon after you have been assessed.
4. Will it be painful?
You will not feel any pain during the procedure because an anesthetic will be administered prior to the surgery. This will ensure a painless and comfortable procedure for each patient. You may feel some pain after surgery once the anesthetic has worn off, but this can be managed with an analgesic prescribed by your surgeon.
5. Is it okay for me to have this procedure done even if I haven’t had any children yet?
If you have an enlarged labia or bothered with excess skin, you are still considered a good candidate for the procedure even if you haven’t had any kids yet.
6. Does this procedure change my ability to undergo natural childbirth?
The skin on your labia is pliable and stretchable. This surgery may reduce the length of your labia but it will not affect its ability to stretch, hence it does not affect your ability to undergo natural vaginal delivery. In fact, in some cases, this has been reported to make delivery much easier.
7. It is okay to have labiaplasty performed even when I am on my period?
You cannot have the procedure done while you are on your period mainly for hygienic purposes. This is an important consideration that will be brought up during your consultation.
8. How do I choose the right surgeon for my labiaplasty surgery?
In choosing the right surgeon for your labiaplasty, you need to go for someone with the training, experience, and skills to perform the procedure. This will take some time because you may have to compare the surgeons who offer this type of surgery and base your decision on the approach which you believe would suit you best.
It is important to go for a surgeon who has a good deal of experience as evidenced in his portfolio. Not every cosmetic surgeon can perform this surgery, so be sure that the one you go for is properly trained and certified.
It is also advisable to go to a surgeon who is reputable. Since the cost is also a major consideration, be sure that you don’t settle for cheap ones. There are a lot of clinics who offer this procedure at a significantly cheaper price but questionable quality. So consider the quality, safety, and price altogether when looking for the right surgeon.
9. How long must I refrain from sexual activity after a labiaplasty?
Surgeons usually advise that you abstain from sexual intercourse and masturbation for 6 weeks after the surgery. This allows the area to heal without further subjecting it to complications.
10. How long until I can go back to work?
You are usually advised to take a week off from work and your usual activities immediately after the surgery. The surgeon’s advice will also vary for each patient based on his assessment. The earliest time would be within 3 days, and 7 days at most. Should any complications arise, the patient will be advised to take additional time to recuperate.
11. How long until I can get the final result?
The final result can be appreciated a few months after surgery. Usually, this will be around 2 months depending on the condition of the patient, and her ability to heal. Some patients would have to wait longer if their procedure required more changes or incisions. Your surgeon will be able to estimate during consultation once your treatment plan has been arranged.
12. Will there be scars?
Yes, there will be scars but the surgeon will use techniques to make it less noticeable. This can be achieved by making the incisions as small as possible. They will even ensure to make these incisions along the natural lines or creases in the area so that these will be barely visible, most especially once these fade away.
13. Will my sexual partner notice that I had something done?
Yes, he will highly likely feel the difference because the labia will be made smaller and tighter. On the outside, your partner will certainly notice the change as the labia will be made more aesthetically pleasing without the sagged skin.
14. Is labiaplasty covered by insurance?
Labiaplasty is classified as an elective surgery just like rhinoplasty, liposuction and breast augmentation which is why it is not covered by insurance.
