Breast reduction is considered by people whose breast size causes physical symptoms (such as neck, shoulder or back discomfort, skin irritation, or difficulty with activity and clothing) or who wish for a size more in proportion with their body. Oversized breasts (breast hypertrophy) often develop around puberty, and sometimes after pregnancy. No medical treatment reduces breast size.

Where breasts differ in size, surgery can also improve symmetry. Suitability is assessed individually, and a mammogram may be arranged before surgery.

Breast reduction removes excess glandular tissue, fat and skin, and reshapes the breast into better proportion. The nipple and areola are usually moved to a higher position while remaining connected to the underlying tissue and blood supply, and the areola may be reduced in size.

Incisions typically run around the areola, vertically below it and, in many cases, horizontally in the breast crease; where less tissue is removed, some of this scarring can be reduced. It is usually performed under general anaesthetic.

The breasts will be sore, swollen and bruised at first, and a soft surgical or support bra is usually recommended. Activity should be kept light for a week or two, with no heavy lifting or pushing for several weeks.

Many people return to work within around two weeks, depending on the individual, and stitches are generally removed over the following weeks.

Breast reduction can relieve the physical symptoms of overly large breasts and create a shape more in proportion with the body, which many people find improves comfort and confidence.

Scars fade over time but do not disappear entirely. Results vary between individuals and are discussed realistically at your consultation.
