10 Facts About Breast Implants Before Heading for the Doctor

Never dive into something drastic if you are not fully aware of what you are getting into. Too often, these are the reasons why so many patients end up with botched results. Breast augmentation may be a very popular procedure, but there are finer details that can spell a big difference when planning for it. To help you out, here are ten facts to consider.

1. Breast Implant Placement

Breast implants can be placed either above or below the muscle. A subglandular placement is when the the implants are placed above the pectoral muscles but below the breast tissues. This type of placement is best for ladies who don’t have enough breast tissue to cover the implant, it also prevents the breasts from eventually drooping off of the the implant.

Another approach is the submuscular placement, where the implant is placed underneath the muscle. This is preferable for women who have a smaller breast tissues as it provides an additional layer of coverage also reducing the likelihood of the implant being too obvious. Surgeons would say that this type of placement gives the most natural result.

2. Balances the Figure

In some cases having small breasts isn’t really the problem, sometimes it’s feeling like your body doesn’t seem to look proportionate. For instance, an A cup woman with a height of 5’10” and an athletic build looks different than that of a 5’o” A cup lady who has a tinier build. Breast implants can create a look that will suit your frame better by balancing out the proportions of one figure.

3. Breast Massage

The rationale behind a breast massage after breast augmentation surgery is to push the implant in all directions to displace it. This prevents the area on which the implant sits to tighten. Surgeons instructions usually vary as to when the appropriate time to do it. Some advise to do it around 3-5 days to allow early movement and prevent scar formation thereby reducing the chances of scar formation.

4. Implants Doesn’t Prevent Breasts From Changing

Having breast implants is not the end all and be all when it comes to enhancing your breasts. As nature would have it, breasts inevitably change. This can be caused by aging, weight fluctuations, or pregnancy which significantly impacts the structures of the breasts. Overtime, the breasts may lose its elasticity and will eventually succumb to the effects of gravity which results in drooping. A more appropriate procedure would be a breast lift, however, it can also be done concurrently with a breast augmentation procedure to further enhance the appearance of the breasts.

5. Fat Transfer Not for Everyone

Fat transfer breast augmentation has been touted to be a safer procedure as it does not involve implants. In this procedure, your own fats are removed from certain parts of your body and then injected into your breasts. The catch here is that this is an option only for women who are looking for a relatively small increase in breast size. It is also worth noting that this does not provide long-lasting results, although it does provide natural-looking results.

6. Drop and Fluff

The process of breast implants dropping into their lower, more natural position after augmentation is called “drop and fluff.” Textured breast implants are less likely to experience this phenomenon because the implant shell is meant to adhere to the tissue where they are intentionally placed.

7. Incision Sizes Differ

An incision for silicone implants would require a longer incision as opposed to a saline implant. In the latter, the deflated shell casing is first inserted on the site before it is filled with saline solution. Silicone implants, on the other hand, already come prefilled which is why a larger incision is necessary to accommodate its insertion.

8. Implant Projection

How your breasts project can also be determined with breast augmentation. A high profile (HP) implant has a high projection with a narrower base width. Whereas, an ultra high profile implant (Ultra HP) has the highest projection with the smallest base width. An evaluation with a good surgeon will help you achieve natural-looking results based on your physical structure.

9. Results Can Look Natural

Breast implants often carry with it the misconception that they are a tad bit too obvious everytime. However, in reality, this isn’t always the case as there are techniques that can make it look natural. Although there are women who prefer to flaunt their assets, some prefer a less dramatic outcome.

It takes a good surgeon with a good eye for aesthetics to make it look natural. Recent trends also make it possible for women to have a moderate-sized implants and shapes that are more biologically faithful to the real thing. So now women have the range of options to achieve results that can appear as subtle or dramatic as they want it to be.

10. Areola Reduction

If you want to enhance the appearance of your breasts,  you can also take it further as to change the size of your areola. This is a procedure called a mastopexy which can be done in conjunction with breast augmentation. This will make your areola more proportional to your new breast size, creating a more aesthetically pleasing outcome. The good thing is that the area around the nipple is very forgiving when it comes to scarring.
